A Tunisian National Guard officer was stabbed on Thursday during an operation to arrest a suspected terrorist in Monastir governorate, according to a judicial source.
The incident occurred when a National Guard unit attempted to detain an individual accused of belonging to a terrorist group at his residence.
During the operation, the suspect’s brother intervened and stabbed the officer in the abdomen.
The injured officer was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently recovering.
Both the suspect and his brother have been taken into police custody, and an investigation is underway by the judicial division combating terrorism. The authorities have not disclosed the identities of the suspects, and the Tunisian Interior Ministry has yet to issue an official statement.
Tunisia continues to grapple with security challenges stemming from extremist threats since the 2011 revolution. Despite significant counterterrorism efforts, the country has experienced deadly attacks, including the 2015 incidents in Sousse and Tunis, which resulted in numerous casualties.
