The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has selected Senegal to host the 2025 CAA Zone II U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championships, scheduled for March.
Tonobok Okowa, the President of CAA Zone II and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), confirmed Senegal’s selection over Nigeria, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. He explained that the decision reflects CAA Zone II’s commitment to fostering regional unity through sports and ensuring inclusivity across West Africa.

“We have previously hosted CAA Zone II competitions in Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana, which are in the western part of the subregion. It’s now time to provide the eastern side with an opportunity to create history and contribute to athletics, a sport we all deeply cherish,” Okowa said.
Okowa highlighted Senegal’s excellent sporting facilities and rich sporting heritage as key factors in the decision. “Senegal Athletics is vibrant, with hospitable and resourceful people who appreciate the value of sports and hospitality. The country’s diversity and dynamic population add to its appeal as a host,” he said.
He also assured participants of adequate security, seamless transportation, and well-organized accommodations to ensure a successful event.
Okowa emphasized that developing youth through athletics is central to his administration’s goals. “The U-18 and U-20 Championships will serve as a platform to harness the potential of young athletes, creating opportunities and promoting development through sports,” he noted.
The championships are expected to attract over 500 athletes and officials from 16 countries, underscoring the event’s significance in uniting the region and showcasing the future of African athletics.
