The Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed that detained lawmakers, Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu, have been released by the Department of State Security (DSS) after hours of interrogation.
The lawmakers were questioned over the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was ousted on January 13 and replaced by Mojisola Meranda.
According to Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Information, the lawmakers were detained for allegedly breaking into a House store where the mace was kept, enabling the removal of the former speaker.
However, Ogundipe emphasized that Obasa’s removal was lawful and constitutional, following due process.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to upholding constitutional governance, citing the 1999 Constitution and the Powers and Privileges Act.
Ogundipe stated that the decision to remove Obasa was democratic and met the required legal majority, and any challenge to this action undermines the Assembly’s constitutional authority.
In solidarity with their detained colleagues, Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai and other members stormed the DSS office to secure their release.
With the lawmakers now freed, the Assembly can focus on its constitutional duties, prioritizing the best interests of Lagos residents.
