A second Ebola patient, a 4-year-old child, has tragically died in Uganda, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), citing the country’s health ministry.
This latest fatality brings the total number of confirmed Ebola cases in Uganda to 10.
The outbreak was declared in January after a male nurse died at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.
The WHO’s Uganda office reported that the 4-year-old child, who was hospitalized at Mulago, passed away on Tuesday.
Ebola symptoms include fever, headache, and muscle pains, and the virus is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids and tissue.
The Ugandan health ministry had previously reported that all eight Ebola patients under care had been discharged, but at least 265 contacts remained under strict quarantine in Kampala and two other cities.
The WHO is working to strengthen surveillance and contact tracing in Uganda, with the organization providing at least $3 million to support the country’s Ebola response.
