United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres has appointed Rwandan economist Anthony Ngororano as the UN Resident Coordinator in Madagascar. In this role, Ngororano will lead and coordinate all UN agencies’ operations in the country as the highest-ranking UN official at the national level.

Before this appointment, Ngororano served as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Kenya, following a similar role in Mauritania. He brings over 20 years of experience in sustainable development, holding leadership positions across the UN system and in the private sector.
His past roles include Chief of the Executive Board Branch in the Office of the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in New York and various positions at UN Women, including Country Representative in Haiti and Chief of the Africa Section.
Ngororano joins a growing list of Rwandans in key UN positions, such as Ambassador Valentine Rugwabiza, who heads the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), and Ambassador Claver Gatete, who leads the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
Beyond his UN career, Ngororano has held advisory roles, including serving as Senior Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Rwanda and as Permanent Secretary. He also worked as a Country Advisor in the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa and held policy and planning roles in Nigeria, Zambia, and Rwanda.

Ngororano’s experience extends to the private sector, where he worked as an investment banker with Citigroup N.A. in Kenya and Tanzania. He began his career as an economist in Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.
He holds Master’s degrees in Development Economics and International Relations from the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex, respectively, as well as an MA in Economics from the University of Edinburgh.
