Gunmen opened fire on a gathering of youths in Rivers State, injuring four people.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Elele, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where youths had assembled to show support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to eyewitnesses, a senior local vigilante commander known as ‘Fucking Naira’ suddenly appeared and opened fire on the group.
The shooter, a factional leader of a prominent political party and supporter of a well-known politician, allegedly threatened more attacks on Fubara’s supporters.
The Rivers police command confirmed that four people sustained injuries during the incident and arrested a suspect.
The police also recovered a single-barrel gun from the suspect and launched a manhunt for the fleeing attackers.
The incident comes amid growing political tensions in Rivers State, following a 48-hour ultimatum given to Fubara by the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill before the March 5 deadline.
