The Abia State government has announced plans to convert the newly commissioned Government House into a five-star hotel, citing security concerns and structural deficiencies.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed that the building lacks essential facilities, including a working elevator, and is situated in a private residential area that poses security risks to the governor.
According to Kanu, only the first floor of the Government House was completed and furnished, while the upper levels have numerous structural issues, despite substantial public funds invested in the construction.
The government has refuted claims by the former Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, that Governor Alex Otti is using propaganda against the previous administration led by Okezie Ikpeazu.
The decision to repurpose the building into a hotel aims to address the issues and create a new revenue stream for the state.
The development has sparked interest and debate among stakeholders, with many awaiting further details on the plan’s implementation.
