A deadly explosion occurred near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory on Monday, leaving one person dead and another injured.

The blast, which happened around 2:50 pm along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass, was initially believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) contained in a rubber can.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was suspected to be a suicide bomber who was prevented from carrying out a larger attack.

A military personnel at the scene described the situation, saying, “The man, believed to be a suicide bomber, was killed by an explosive contained in a rubber can close to Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja.”

However, military authorities raised doubts about the cause of the explosion, suggesting it could have been triggered by a phone device rather than an IED.

The FCT Police Command confirmed the incident and cordoned off the scene, deploying officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to secure the area and conduct a thorough investigation.

The police also rescued a male victim, who was promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to nearby police stations.

The investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis underway to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.
