Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has offered an unconditional “political amnesty” to Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the 2024 governorship election. This gesture aims to foster peace and heal divisions that emerged during the election.
Okpebholo described Ighodalo’s situation as discomforting since his defeata and alleged sidelining by his political benefactors, particularly Godwin Obaseki, who reportedly “lured” Ighodalo to run for elections and is now hiding in the United States.
The governor expressed concern over Ighodalo’s political isolation, stating that half of Obaseki’s cabinet members who supported Ighodalo have deserted him and are hiding abroad. Okpebholo believes this amnesty will save Ighodalo from humiliation and loneliness.
He invited Ighodalo to join the All Progressives Congress, highlighting that their visions align and Ighodalo can contribute meaningfully to Edo State’s development.
Okpebholo emphasized the need for unity and reconciliation beyond party lines, assuring Ighodalo that past differences would be set aside if he accepts the amnesty.
This move is seen as a show of true sportsmanship and a deliberate effort to promote collective progress and lasting peace in the state.
