President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Ogun State Government for successfully hosting the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, describing the event as a world-class spectacle that showcased Nigeria’s unity, talent, and sporting excellence.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held on Thursday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, the President, who was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, commended the vibrant display of athleticism and national unity over the 12 days of intense competition.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, and other high-ranking government officials were also in attendance to witness the conclusion of the multi-sport event that ran from May 16 to May 30 across various venues in the state.

“As an athlete, if you have competed at this event, know that you have been discovered,” Tinubu’s message read. “Your presence reaffirms the unity and collaborative federalism that underpins our national strength. Your zeal has contributed to the success of this world-class event hosted by Ogun State.”
Declaring the festival officially closed, Akpabio reiterated the Federal Government’s support for youth development through sports.
Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for entrusting Ogun with the hosting rights, highlighting the collective effort of the people of the state in delivering a memorable tournament.

“It has taken an entire state united in purpose to deliver an experience our nation will not forget in a hurry,” Abiodun said. “To our athletes, you are all champions. You have not only competed but inspired — embodying the essence of sports, where excellence meets honour and discipline meets grace.”
The 2024 edition, tagged the Gateway Games, featured around 10,000 athletes representing the 36 states of Nigeria, the Federal Capital Territory, and select junior athletes, all vying for medals and glory.

At the end of the festival, Delta State emerged as the overall winners for the fifth consecutive time and ninth time in the competition’s history.
The 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival is scheduled to take place in Enugu State in 2026.
