The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan has shot down an Il-76 military transport aircraft near the city of Babanus, killing all personnel on board.

The aircraft was being used by the Sudanese Air Force to transport troops, equipment, and supplies between military bases.

According to reports, the RSF used a Chinese-made FK-2000 air defense system, allegedly supplied by the United Arab Emirates, to down the plane.

This incident is the latest in a series of clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese government.

In October 2024, militants from the RSF claimed to have shot down an Il-76 cargo plane in western Sudan, with Russian citizens reportedly among the aircraft’s crew.

The Sudanese conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian and economic costs, with both sides accusing each other of atrocities and human rights abuses.

The downing of the Il-76 aircraft is a significant blow to the Sudanese Air Force, which relies heavily on its limited airpower to counter the RSF’s ground operations.

The incident highlights the ongoing instability and security challenges in Sudan, where conflict between different factions continues to pose a threat to civilians and stability in the region.
