Uganda’s presidential election has been marred by violence, with at least seven people killed overnight in central Uganda, according to police reports.
The violence broke out in the town of Butambala, about 55km southwest of the capital Kampala, amidst allegations of electoral fraud and intimidation.
Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is leading in the election results, with over 75% of votes counted, while his main challenger Bobi Wine trails behind with around 21%.
The electoral commission announced that Museveni won 5.85 million votes (58.64%), while Wine secured 3.48 million votes (34.83%).
The election has been criticized for its lack of transparency, with allegations of ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and internet shutdowns. Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party has alleged mass fraud and called for protests.
