At least 172 bodies have been discovered in two mass graves in Uvira, eastern Congo, following the withdrawal of the AFC/M23 rebel group. The graves were found in Kilomoni and Kavimvira neighborhoods, with 31 and 141 bodies, respectively.
The Congolese army had re-entered the city last month after the rebels withdrew under U.S. pressure.
The AFC/M23 spokesperson denied knowledge of the mass graves, accusing the government of spreading propaganda.
Human Rights Watch had previously reported summary executions by M23 fighters in Uvira, citing residents and a UN source.
The discovery adds to concerns about human rights abuses in eastern Congo, where fighting continues despite mediation efforts.
