The attack comes amid ongoing fighting in eastern Congo, despite mediation efforts by Qatar and the United States.

The AFC/M23 rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the airport was used to launch operations against their positions and civilians. Rwanda, however, denies backing the rebels.

The Congolese government has not officially responded to the latest rebel statement.
