South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be introduced in the country’s top-flight league next season.
McKenzie disclosed this while outlining measures aimed at improving officiating standards and boosting the credibility of domestic football competitions.
“VAR will be introduced in the South African Premier Football next season,” he said, adding that discussions are ongoing with the South African Football Association to ensure a smooth rollout.

The introduction of VAR is designed to minimise refereeing errors, enhance decision-making on crucial incidents such as goals, penalties and red cards, and bring the league in line with international best practices.
