The Nigerian Army has uncovered shallow graves in Imo State believed to contain the remains of a military couple killed in 2022.
In a statement released on Saturday, the army said the discovery was made during a clearance operation targeting a hideout linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The graves were found on April 24 along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area. According to the military, the remains are suspected to belong to retired Master Warrant Officer Audu Linus and Private Gloria Matthew, who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
The operation, carried out by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies, was based on intelligence aimed at dismantling criminal camps in the area. The army said troops encountered heavy resistance as they approached the enclave but successfully repelled multiple ambushes and forced the attackers to flee.
Following the clearance of the camp, a search of the area led to the discovery of the shallow graves. The remains have since been exhumed and secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.
The military added that efforts are ongoing to contact the families of the deceased to assist with identification and burial arrangements.
