Senate Minority Whip, Tony Nwoye, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal crises and ongoing legal disputes within his former party.

Nwoye’s defection was announced on Wednesday during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the lawmaker’s resignation letter on the floor of the Senate.
In the letter, the senator representing Anambra North said his decision was driven by “internal divisions and multiple litigations” affecting the ADC, adding that a recent court judgment had further weakened the party’s stability.

He formally declared his move to the NDC, stating that the party’s internal challenges made it difficult for him to continue.
The development comes just a day after two other senators, Victor Umeh and Rufai Hanga, also joined the NDC, boosting its presence in the upper chamber.
With Nwoye’s defection, the NDC now has four senators, while the PDP has five. The ADC retains seven senators, remaining the major opposition party in the Senate.
