An unidentified student of the University of Benin was shot dead inside his vehicle near the Ugbowo campus gate in Benin City on Sunday, sparking panic on campus and renewed concerns over insecurity around the area.
The student had just finished his semester exams when he was attacked. A video obtained by SaharaReporters showed him slumped in the car with a gunshot wound to the forehead, and bullet holes visible in the windscreen. Residents gathered at the scene as his body remained in the vehicle.
UNIBEN management said the killing did not involve members of the institution and suggested it may be linked to suspected cult violence outside the campus. The university expressed sadness over the incident and urged students and staff to remain calm and vigilant.
Efforts to reach Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem were unsuccessful.
