The Lagos State government says it will launch a state-owned driver’s licence in partnership with the federal government to improve road safety and traffic management.
Speaking at a press briefing in Ikeja on Monday, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to approve the rollout in the coming weeks.
“Our Lagos driver’s licence will be launched in a couple of weeks as we get a nod from Mr Governor,” Osiyemi said.
Motorists will have the option of obtaining either the federal driver’s licence or the Lagos-issued licence. The commissioner said the initiative is designed to make the licensing process more efficient and reduce delays currently faced by applicants.
During the review period, 56,876 driver’s licences were processed, made up of 27,067 new applications and 29,810 renewals. The process was carried out in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Osiyemi added that 1,158 international driving permits were also processed within the same period.
On rail transportation, he said the second phase of the Blue Line rail project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027 for full commercial operations. The first phase recorded 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
For the Red Line project, the state government procured 24 new train coaches arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger movement along the corridor.
Osiyemi also said work has intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line rail project, which will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Sangotedo.
