The World Health Organization said six tons of supplies to fight Ebola are set to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, as authorities work to contain a growing outbreak.
The shipment includes personal protective equipment for health workers and medical samples, according to Anne Ancia, WHO Representative in Ituri province. It follows 12 tons of supplies already sent to the country.
Efforts are underway to scale up surveillance, testing and contact tracing, Ancia said, adding that there remains “great uncertainty as to the scale and extent of this outbreak.”
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain and has prompted tighter health screening at border crossings between Congo and Rwanda, including at the Grande Barrier crossing in Goma.
Health officials are responding as cases continue to rise in eastern Congo.
