Senegal’s parliament speaker, El Malick Ndiaye, has resigned, adding to political uncertainty in the country two days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed the government.
Ndiaye, a senior figure in the ruling PASTEF party, announced his resignation on Sunday, calling it a personal decision made in the higher interest of the nation.
President Faye sacked Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Friday and dissolved the government after months of tension between the two leaders. Faye and Sonko were allies who won power together in 2024, but their relationship strained amid economic challenges linked to debt and external factors.
Parliament is set to meet on Tuesday to vote on reinstating Sonko as a lawmaker and to elect a new speaker for the National Assembly. Some critics argue that reinstating Sonko would be illegal, as he has never served as a member of parliament.
