The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the affirmation of former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following what it described as disruptions to its Special National Convention in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Comrade Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the party’s Interim National Working Committee, the PDP alleged that its planned convention was obstructed through the deployment of security personnel and pressure on the management of the chosen venue.

The party said it had duly informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies about the event and had secured the A Class Event Centre in Abuja for the convention. However, it claimed the venue management later cancelled the booking after receiving alleged threats from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that the property’s Certificate of Occupancy could be revoked if the event was held.

The PDP also alleged that the Federal Capital Territory Administration issued warnings to business premises against hosting gatherings it considered unlawful. It further stated that more than 20 truckloads of police officers were deployed around the venue on the eve of the convention, effectively restricting access.

According to the party, an emergency meeting involving members of the Board of Trustees, the Interim National Working Committee, the National Executive Committee, state chairmen, governorship and National Assembly candidates, and other stakeholders resolved not to confront security operatives.

The party said elder statesmen within its ranks advised restraint, urging members to avoid confrontation and instead focus on preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The PDP added that a formal presentation and flag-off ceremony for Jonathan’s candidacy would be announced at a later date.

It condemned what it described as the abuse of state institutions and warned that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process if not addressed. The opposition party also alleged that the incidents reflected shrinking political space and attempts to weaken opposition participation.

The PDP called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in order to reduce political tensions and ensure that all political parties are allowed to operate freely within the provisions of the law.

Reaffirming its commitment to the 2027 elections, the party urged members to remain united and directed its Interim National Working Committee to intensify preparations and engage stakeholders locally and internationally on what it described as efforts to stifle opposition politics in the country.
