President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 for Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.
SGF George Akume announced the plan Tuesday at the inauguration of the inter-ministerial committee organizing the events in Abuja. He said Tinubu’s speech will be a key highlight, alongside other activities running from June 4 to June 12.
Akume framed Democracy Day as a moment to honor Nigerians who fought for democracy, especially heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late MKO Abiola. He added the anniversary will also let the federal government showcase efforts to strengthen democratic institutions despite current economic pressures.
This year’s lineup includes a world press conference June 4, special Juma’at prayers June 5, an interdenominational church service June 7, a public lecture June 9, youth and women programs June 10, Tinubu’s broadcast and a gala night both on June 12.
Akume urged the committee to move fast since only 10 days remain, noting activities will reflect the nation’s mood and the government’s push for fiscal responsibility.
