Algeria kept their FIFA World Cup knockout-stage hopes alive after coming from behind to defeat debutants Jordan 2-1 in a thrilling Group J encounter in San Francisco.
Jordan looked set to claim their first-ever World Cup point after taking a first-half lead through Nizar Al Rashdan, but Algeria produced a strong second-half comeback to secure a crucial victory.

The North Africans dominated possession for large periods of the match and created several opportunities early on. Amine Gouiri and Fares Chaibi both went close, while veteran winger Riyad Mahrez was denied by Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila after being played through on goal.
Despite Algeria’s control, Jordan struck first in the 36th minute. Al Rashdan capitalised on a misplaced pass from Ramiz Zerrouki before curling a fine effort into the net to hand the tournament debutants a surprise lead.
Algeria increased the pressure after the restart, with Abulaila producing important saves to keep his side in front. However, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the 69th minute when Nadhir Benbouali powered home a header from Mahrez’s corner to level the score.

The Desert Foxes continued to push for a winner and were rewarded eight minutes from time. Another dangerous corner caused problems in the Jordan penalty area, and Gouiri reacted quickest to hook the loose ball into the net and complete the comeback.
The victory moves Algeria back into contention for a place in the knockout rounds, while Jordan remain without a point in their maiden World Cup campaign.
Algeria will now face Austria in their final group match, while Jordan take on group leaders Argentina as they seek a positive end to their historic tournament debut.
