President Bola Tinubu has signed off on turning the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa into a full-fledged specialised university.

The institution will now be known as the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa. The announcement was made on Friday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The move follows a proposal by Senator Ahmed Aliyu of Nasarawa West, who argued that Nasarawa State has a strong edge in solid minerals and needs a dedicated school to train talent for that sector and for Nigeria’s broader industrial push.

Under the presidential directive, the new university will focus on world-class training, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies. The goal is to produce graduates with the skills needed for value addition, tech development and sustainable mining across the country.

“The approval reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to aligning Nigeria’s tertiary education system with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said. It added that specialised institutions like this are meant to address the country’s economic needs and leverage its competitive advantages.

Tinubu has asked the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and other relevant agencies to begin the conversion process in line with existing laws and regulations.

He also reiterated that investing in education remains central to his administration’s plans for economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity.
