The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed national team coach Pape Thiaw following the country’s disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup.

The federation announced the decision on Sunday, stating that its executive committee had resolved to relieve Thiaw and his entire coaching staff of their duties.
“Following a meeting of the executive committee, it was decided to initiate proceedings to relieve national team coach Pape Thiaw, as well as the entire coaching staff, of their duties,” the FSF said in a statement.

The federation also confirmed that FSF President Abdoulaye Fall will address the media on Monday to explain the reasons behind the decision and outline the federation’s plans for the future of the national team.
Thiaw, a former Senegal international, was appointed head coach in 2024 but failed to steer the Lions of Teranga to a deep run at the World Cup.

Senegal endured a difficult group-stage campaign, losing to France and Norway before securing qualification for the knockout stage with a convincing 5-0 victory over Iraq.
However, their tournament ended in dramatic fashion in the Round of 32 after surrendering a two-goal lead against Belgium. Senegal led 2-0 until the 86th minute before Belgium mounted a stunning comeback to force extra time and eventually claim a 3-2 victory.

The World Cup disappointment ultimately proved costly for the 45-year-old coach.
Despite leading Senegal to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations final in January, the triumph was later nullified after the team was stripped of the title as punishment for walking off the pitch during the chaotic final against Morocco.
The FSF is expected to announce its next steps regarding the appointment of a new head coach after Monday’s press conference.
