The Federal Government has suspended its plan to increase registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO Senior School Certificate Examinations.

In a statement released on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Education said the letter dated June 18, 2026 proposing the adjustment has been withdrawn. The decision, according to the Ministry, is to allow for a more comprehensive review and broader consultations with stakeholders before any final decision is made.

Signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the statement explained that while the proposed review was driven by rising operational costs — including logistics, security, printing, technology and quality assurance — the current fees have remained unchanged for years despite those increases.

However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has directed that the proposal be put on hold in line with the government’s commitment to inclusive and evidence-based policymaking. The Ministry said it received and values public feedback on issues around access to quality education.

As part of the fresh review, the Ministry will engage examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents’ associations, organized labour and other education stakeholders to ensure any future decision is fair, sustainable and protects access for students and families.

The Ministry reaffirmed that the welfare of students and equitable access to education remain central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the sector, and promised to keep Nigerians updated throughout the consultation process.
