Tension gripped parts of Lagos on Tuesday after supporters of the late National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chieftain, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaiya, reportedly prevented security operatives from accessing St. Nicholas Hospital to recover his body following confirmation of his death.
Sources told AAN TV that the group, allegedly led by an associate identified as Sego, blocked police officers from taking custody of the corpse and caused a disturbance at the entrance of the hospital.
Toba Ijaiya was reportedly shot by unidentified assailants on Sunday, July 12, around the Fadeyi area along Ikorodu Road, Lagos. He was initially said to have survived the attack and was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital for treatment before reports emerged that he later succumbed to his injuries.
The slain transport union leader, described by some sources as a high-ranking NURTW chieftain, had reportedly been linked in street speculation to the killing of a prominent member of the Buccaneers (BAN) confraternity, identified as Agali, who was shot dead inside his vehicle in the Iponri area of Surulere on April 11, 2026.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the hospital standoff or the circumstances surrounding Ijaiya’s death.
