The final batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa landed in Lagos on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to the federal government’s emergency airlift.
The Air Peace flight arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 11:28 a.m. Officials on ground received the returnees alongside representatives from relevant agencies.
This marks the seventh and last evacuation flight. Six earlier flights had earlier conveyed hundreds of Nigerians back home following growing concerns over xenophobic incidents in South Africa.
The evacuation was launched after reports of attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians, prompted the government to organize a safe return for citizens who wanted to leave.
With today’s arrival, authorities say the evacuation exercise has been concluded. Support services including documentation, medical checks, and transport assistance were made available for the returnees at the airport.
