National Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso says Peter Obi has put in writing his commitment to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Kwankwaso said the agreement was not based on verbal trust alone. According to him, both he and Obi signed separate documents to formalize the arrangement as part of the NDC’s strategy for the next presidential election.

“We are all gentlemen. Even though we have accepted to put it even on paper. We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” Kwankwaso said.

The confirmation comes as discussions continue over reports that Obi agreed to a single four-year term in a broader opposition deal aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Kwankwaso also spoke about the NDC’s support base. He said their voters are driven by conviction, not by money or handouts on election day.

“Our supporters are not just merely people who are looking for money or who are looking for textile or food items on the day of election. These are people who are determined not only to vote but to make sure that the votes are being protected,” he said.

On his own political future, Kwankwaso declined to say whether he would run for president in 2031. He said the party’s focus now is 2027.

“We are praying that all of us should see 2027 and, of course, 2031. We will look at the circumstances and see what can be done, but by the grace of God, I believe our party (NDC), and of course my humble self and His Excellency Peter Obi, have a short-term plan which we are executing now,” he said.

The one-term pledge has become a central talking point in ongoing opposition coalition talks. Supporters say it is meant to promote balance and unity against the APC. Critics, however, are questioning what the legal and political implications of such an agreement would be.
