A confrontation between personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and officers of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) of the Delta State Police Command has raised concerns over inter-agency relations in Nigeria.

The altercation occurred on Tuesday, February 11, around 5 PM, at an Air Force checkpoint in Jeddo, Okpe Local Government Area after police officers arrested 25-year-old Ibohama Precious for possessing illicit drugs, including marijuana and Canadian loud.

According to Delta State Police Command spokesperson Edafe Bright, QRS officers stopped a Toyota Corolla (AKD-73-FL) during a routine patrol.

Upon seeing the officers, the occupants fled, prompting a police chase that led to Precious’ arrest.

While transporting the suspect to the police station, the police vehicle was stopped at the Air Force checkpoint, where NAF personnel allegedly demanded the suspect’s release. When the officers refused, a confrontation ensued, escalating into a physical altercation.

In response to the incident, Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi Abaniwonda described the situation as “embarrassing” and assured the public that investigations were ongoing in collaboration with the Air Force.

“The command is aware of the embarrassing situation… The Commissioner of Police and Air Force authorities are looking into the ugly incident and putting all modalities in place to forestall future occurrences,” the police statement read.

The clash has sparked concerns about rivalry and lack of coordination between security agencies, with authorities urging for improved cooperation to prevent similar incidents.
