The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months due to her alleged violation of the Senate’s rules.

This decision comes after a dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of sexual harassment

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct recommended the suspension, citing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s “total violation” of the Senate Standing Rules.

Despite efforts by some senators to reduce the suspension period to three months, the majority voted to uphold the six-month sanction.

However, the Senate ruled that the suspension could be lifted or reduced if Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a written apology.

Before her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan had submitted a petition accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, but the committee dismissed her claims due to procedural issues.

The controversy began on February 20, 2025, after a seating arrangement dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was escorted out of the chambers by the Sergeant-At-Arms after her suspension and declared that “this injustice would not be sustained.”
