Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that impeaching Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara won’t lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state.
Wike made this statement at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, saying that if Fubara has committed impeachable offenses, including withholding lawmakers’ salaries for months, then he should face the consequences.
Wike emphasized that impeachment is a constitutional provision and not a criminal offense.
He also dismissed concerns that impeaching Fubara would lead to chaos, saying “Rubbish! Nothing will happen.” According to Wike, if the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly decides to impeach Fubara, it’s within their constitutional rights to do so.
This development comes after the Supreme Court handed down a verdict on the protracted political situation in Rivers State, dismissing Fubara’s appeal challenging the validity of the House of Assembly presided over by Amaewhule as the Speaker.
The court also ordered Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately with other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
