The state of emergency was declared due to the lingering political unrest between the Executive and the Legislature in Rivers, which has crippled governance and threatened peace and security in the state.

Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas has been appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers, while the judiciary will continue operations.

The National Assembly was consulted before the declaration, with the leadership meeting with the President and security chiefs ahead of the broadcast.
