It said members of the opposition Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) have been arrested and will be prosecuted.

However, residents of the capital N’Djamena reported hearing heavy gunfire in the city on Wednesday.

The attack came hours after the announcement that Chad will hold the presidential election on May 6.

“Anyone looking to disturb the democratic process under way in the country will be prosecuted and brought to justice,” the government said on Wednesday in a statement.

In the aftermath of the lethal assault, internet connectivity in Chad experienced disruptions, as reported by the internet watchdog Netblocks.

Communication Minister Abderaman Koulamallah attributed the attack on the national security agency to PSF leader Yaya Dillo, who has yet to provide a statement.

The status of Mr. Dillo’s arrest remains uncertain; however, in a Wednesday morning Facebook post, he claimed that the military had targeted him at his party headquarters.

Witnesses reported hearing intense gunfire near the PSF base, with multiple military vehicles observed heading in that direction.
