Seychelles’ president-elect, Patrick Herminie, has promised to stop the construction of a luxury resort on Assumption Island, a tiny island in the Indian Ocean nation.

The resort, backed by Qatari investors, has been criticized by environmental campaigners due to its potential impact on the island’s sensitive ecosystem.

The island serves as a gateway to the Aldabra atoll, home to 400 unique species and one of the most pristine ecosystems globally.

Herminie, who defeated incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan in a recent election, described the current deal as “unacceptable” and stated that his government would renegotiate the terms. “We will put everything on hold and have a meeting with the investors and express our concerns,” he said. Ramkalawan had defended the deal, citing the need for investment in the small island nation.
