US President Donald Trump will host the leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday to sign a peace agreement, aiming to end decades of conflict in the region.
The deal, brokered by the US, was initially signed by the countries’ foreign ministers in June and builds upon an economic framework agreed upon in November.
The meeting seeks to revive a faltering peace process, amid concerns over Rwanda’s backing of the M23 rebel group, which has seized control of eastern Congo’s largest cities, sparking fears of a wider war.
