In what could be a major turning point for higher education in Nigeria, the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) officially signed a new agreement on Wednesday in Abuja.

The deal aims to improve the quality of university education and, most importantly, ensure a stable and uninterrupted academic calendar after years of disruptive strikes.

At the signing ceremony, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa hailed the agreement as a symbol of “renewed trust,” crediting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to education.

While expressing optimism, ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna noted the union’s cautious stance due to past experiences, but voiced hope that strike threats would no longer be necessary to ensure the government honors its commitments.
