The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognised the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, with Abdulrahman Mohammed listed as the party’s national chairman on INEC’s website.
This recognition comes after a faction of the PDP, led by Wike, held a national convention and elected Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu as national chairman and secretary, respectively.
The convention, attended by about 2,500 delegates, was held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja and saw the election of a 19-member National Working Committee (NWC) and other national officers.
Wike, identified as the national leader of the party, assured delegates that the PDP would contest the 2027 general elections and praised members for their resilience.
The recognition by INEC is a significant development in the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, with another faction led by Tanimu Turaki claiming leadership.
The Turaki faction has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the judgment recognizing the Wike-backed faction.
