The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has condemned the abduction of students by gunmen in Oyo and Borno states, saying the attacks show a worsening security crisis and government failure to protect citizens.
In a statement on Friday, May 16, 2026, MSSN said armed bandits seized several students in Ahoro Esinele, Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, and Mussa village, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, on May 15. The group described the incidents as “disturbing” and said they further expose the inability of authorities to guarantee safety, especially for students.
MSSN said it was unacceptable that students keep becoming targets for kidnappers and terrorists while political leaders focus more on 2027 election calculations. It warned that repeated attacks on schools suggest human life is being treated lightly by those in power.
The group also mourned the death of Mr. Joel Adesiyan, a secondary school teacher killed during the attack in Esinele, Oyo State. MSSN extended condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and the school community.
MSSN called on the Federal Government, security agencies, and the governments of Oyo and Borno states to act immediately to secure the safe and unconditional release of all abducted students. It urged political leaders to shift attention from early election moves to the urgent duty of protecting lives and property.
The group said continued failure to tackle insecurity was eroding public trust and threatening the future of education in Nigeria. It added that students deserve safety, families deserve peace, and Nigerians deserve protection.
MSSN said it stands with the affected students, families, and communities and prayed for the quick and safe return of all victims.
The statement was signed by National Amir Engr. Tajudeen Mustapha Olumide and National Publicity Secretary Moshood Abiola Olatunbi.
