A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The ruling was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Peter Lifu in a suit filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who had asked the court to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for any political party. The plaintiff also sought an order to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
The suit raised questions over whether Jonathan remained eligible under Sections 1 and 137 of the 1999 Constitution.
In his judgment, Justice Lifu held that Jonathan could participate in the election. The court did not provide further details at the time of the ruling.
Last week, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki offered Jonathan a waiver to run as the party’s sole presidential candidate.
