Hosts, Canada secured a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Africa 1-0 in a dramatic knockout clash at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.

Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal deep into second-half stoppage time to send Canada into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history and end South Africa’s campaign.

South Africa dominated possession for much of the encounter but struggled to convert their control into clear scoring opportunities. Canada, meanwhile, created the better chances and came close to taking the lead before halftime when Aubrey Modiba cleared an effort off the goal line, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.

Canada also appealed for a penalty after Richie Laryea went down in the box following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau. However, following a VAR review, the referee ruled against awarding a spot-kick.

The pattern continued after the break, with South Africa enjoying more of the ball while Canada remained the greater attacking threat. Williams denied Tani Oluwaseyi with another fine save in the 66th minute before Siyabonga Mbokazi made a crucial clearance to prevent Jonathan David from scoring into an empty net.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada found the breakthrough in the 92nd minute. After South Africa failed to clear their lines, Eustaquio controlled the loose ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a low strike into the bottom corner to seal a memorable victory.

The result sends Canada into the Round of 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco, while South Africa exit the tournament after a spirited campaign.
