Another 271 Nigerians touched down in Lagos on Tuesday morning, bringing home the third group of citizens evacuated from South Africa.
An Air Peace flight landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport just before 11:00 a.m. The evacuees are part of the Federal Government’s emergency repatriation effort.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had confirmed on Monday that the third batch would arrive Tuesday with 271 passengers.
The evacuation comes after vigilante groups and other organisations in South Africa issued a June 30 deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country.
Speaking in a nationwide broadcast Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged frustrations over illegal immigration. He urged citizens to keep protests peaceful and said only the government can enforce immigration laws. He also warned against violence, intimidation, and attacks on foreigners.
With this latest arrival, Nigeria has now evacuated 595 citizens total — 258 in the first batch and 66 in the second.
