Fifteen people, including a one-year-old boy, were brutally killed on Sunday night in an attack on Ri Do, also known as Gidan Ado, a hamlet in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Irigwe Development Association (IDA), in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Sam Jugo, revealed that the predominantly Irigwe community from Bassa was invaded by unidentified gunmen. The attackers killed 15 residents and left several others seriously injured.

Describing the attack as unprovoked, the IDA leadership called on security agencies to act decisively to prevent future incidents and urged caution to avoid reprisal actions.

“The identities of the perpetrators have not yet been ascertained, and it would be inappropriate to speculate at this time,” the statement read. “We appeal for restraint and urge security agencies to ensure such heinous acts are prevented in the future.”

The incident comes just days before the yuletide season, heightening concerns about community safety.

Meanwhile, the victims have been laid to rest in a mass burial at the community burial ground. As of press time, the joint security task force Operation Safe Haven and the police have yet to issue any official comments on the attack.
