Following the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, early this morning, all eyes have turned to former Oyo State Governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the likely successor to the revered throne.

Oba Olakulehin died peacefully just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday and exactly one year after his formal coronation as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024. His demise has triggered the unique and well-established succession tradition of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, which allows for swift appointment of a new monarch without prolonged disputes.

Under Ibadan’s rotational chieftaincy structure, succession follows a clear seniority ladder through the Balogun and Otun lines. High Chief Ladoja, who holds the title of Otun Olubadan (the most senior chief in his line), is widely believed to be next in line.

Born on September 25, 1944, Rashidi Ladoja is a respected figure in Oyo State politics and Ibadan traditional affairs. He served as Governor from 2003 to 2007 and has remained a prominent voice in the state’s public life and in the Ibadan traditional institution.

With his impending ascension, Ladoja will become the first former executive governor to occupy the Olubadan stool, blending deep political experience with royal tradition.

With the passing of Oba Olakulehin, the Olubadan-in-Council is expected to convene in the coming days to formally announce the transition arrangements.

Residents of Ibadan have begun expressing both condolences for the late Olubadan and anticipation of what many see as an inevitable succession.
