The Supreme Court has reaffirmed the death sentence of Maryam Sanda, who was convicted of stabbing her husband, Bilyamin Bello, to death in 2017.

In a split judgment of four to one, the apex court dismissed Sanda’s appeal, stating that the prosecution had established her guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Sanda was initially sentenced to death by hanging by an Abuja high court in January 2020.

Although she had spent about six years and eight months at the Suleja prison, President Bola Tinubu reduced her sentence to 12 years on compassionate grounds.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that the president’s pardon was wrong, as the case was still pending appeal.

The court held that the Court of Appeal’s decision upholding the sentence was unassailable.
