Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, has publicly disputed claims that his former running mate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on Friday, Baba-Ahmed clarified that Obi only announced an alignment with a political coalition during a recent event in Enugu, not an outright defection.

He challenged the Labour Party leadership to confirm whether Obi has formally resigned by submitting a letter and returning his party card, as required by law.

Despite the political divergence following Obi’s move in December 2025 to join the ADC-led coalition, Baba-Ahmed affirmed that his personal relationship with Obi remains strong and cordial.

He extended an olive branch, stating that Obi would be “more than welcome” to return to the Labour Party if he fails to secure the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

While reaffirming his own loyalty to the Labour Party, Baba-Ahmed also confirmed his presidential ambitions, stating he would “categorically yes” run for president, pending the official timelines from the party and the electoral commission.
