The Abia State Government has banned the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, in the major urban centers of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

Governor Alex Otti gave the directive, which was announced Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu. The ban takes effect on Monday, June 22, 2026.

According to Kanu, the move is part of the government’s push to “strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and promote a more organized transportation system” in the affected cities.

All commercial motorcycle operators have been ordered to stop operating in the designated metropolitan areas before the effective date.

Kanu said security agencies and enforcement authorities have been directed to ensure full compliance. Anyone caught flouting the order will be arrested, and their motorcycle will be confiscated in line with state laws.

The commissioner also called on residents, transport unions, community leaders, and the general public to support the implementation of the directive, which he described as being “in the interest of the collective safety and development of the state.”
