The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the Ondo South senatorial by-election held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Announcing the results on Sunday at the collation centre in Okitipupa LGA, Returning Officer Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye said Faduyile secured 68,474 votes — far ahead of his closest rivals.

Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, finished second with 1,411 votes. Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People’s Party, APP, got 213 votes, while Clement Funso-Nejo of Boot Party, BP, polled 70 votes.

According to Solomon-Ibileye, Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, a total of 70,770 votes were cast and 602 were rejected.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo, Mutiu Agboke, described the exercise as a “sandbox” for the 2027 general elections. He noted that the logistical challenges encountered would help the commission improve its preparations.

“The results truly reflected the people’s voice,” Agboke said. “We also thank God that all INEC officials deployed to the riverine areas returned safely with no incident.”

The by-election covered six local governments: Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo.

The seat became vacant after former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
