Dangote Industries Limited has struck an $800 million agreement to scale up its cement operations in Ogun State, a move set to significantly boost Nigeria’s manufacturing output.
The conglomerate signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday in Lagos with China’s Sinoma International Engineering Co. Ltd. to expand the Dangote Cement facility in Itori.
Under the deal, the plant’s annual production capacity will rise from 6 million to 12 million metric tonnes once the expansion is completed.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, signed on behalf of the company, while Sinoma’s Chairman, Lin Zhong, represented the Chinese engineering firm.
Company officials say the project will further cement Nigeria’s position — pun intended — as one of Africa’s top producers and exporters of cement.
The Itori expansion is the latest in Dangote’s push to grow local industry capacity. The group’s refinery in Lagos was commissioned back in May 2023.
The agreement comes amid ongoing public debate over cement pricing in Nigeria, with manufacturers facing pressure from government and consumers to make the product more affordable.
